I’m Uzoamaka (but please call me Amaka!)

I’m a psychiatric nurse practitioner who believes that it’s OK to not be OK. Acknowledging your struggles is the first step toward healing, and there’s no shame in seeking support when life gets overwhelming.

My journey into psychiatry began during my senior year of college, where I had my psychiatric rotation. I was introduced to a world of mental health that felt both distant and incredibly personal. As I started treating patients, I felt deeply connected to their struggles but also began to realize I was fighting my own battle with depression and anxiety. It was different being on the other side—I was supposed to have it together. I felt ashamed because, as a provider, I was expected to know how to cope with life’s challenges. I didn’t feel like I could tell anyone, so I kept it to myself and suffered in silence, wrestling with the stigma of it all.

I eventually realized that experiencing these struggles myself made me a better provider. It gave me a deeper understanding of the pain my patients feel and the courage it takes to seek help. As Robin Williams once said “I think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy because they know what it's like to feel absolutely worthless and they don't want anyone else to feel like that.”  This quote resonated deeply with me and shaped the way I approach care—without judgment, with compassion, and with the unwavering belief that healing is possible for everyone.
